Twins' Zebby Matthews: Chased early in Wednesday's loss

Matthews (9-10) took the loss Wednesday as the Twins fell 7-2 to the Tigers, coughing up five runs on two hits and four walks over 2.1 innings. He struck out two.
Two runs in the first inning and three more in the third chased Matthews from the mound after just 58 pitches (27 strikes) in his shortest outing of the season, one that was delayed by an hour and 40 minutes prior to the first pitch. It was a tough pill to swallow for the right-hander after he'd lasted at least five innings in eight straight starts, posting a 3.64 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 39:12 K:BB over that stretch as he built a case for a rotation spot in 2027. The loss drops Minnesota to five games back of a wild-card spot with 16 to play, and four other teams they'd need to move past to make the postseason. Matthews lines up to make his next start at home next week against the Yankees.
Twins' Ryan Jeffers: Getting breather during day game

The 30-year-old slugger played hero Tuesday, taking Drew Anderson deep in the sixth inning to flip the script on a 2-1 deficit. Clemens has reached 25 homers on the season for the first time in his career, and four of them have come in the last 11 games -- a stretch in which he sports a .243/.370/.568 slash line with seven RBI and eight runs.

The 26-year-old remains perfect in converting save chances this season as an unlikely savior for a shaky Twins bullpen. Since the All-Star break, Gomez has pocketed 11 saves and a win in 18 innings with a 3.50 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 19:13 K:BB.

Twins' Dean Kremer: Nabs second win as Twin

Kremer (3-5) picked up the win in Tuesday's 3-2 victory over the Tigers, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out three.
The right-hander blanked the home squad for four innings before Kevin McGonigle tagged him for a two-run homer in the fifth, but the Twins struck back in the top of the sixth and took the lead while Kremer was still the pitcher of record. Over seven starts since being acquired from Baltimore at the trade deadline, Kremer has a 2-1 record with a 4.79 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 31:14 K:BB in 35.2 innings. He'll look to build on this performance in his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home early next week against the Yankees.
Martin (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Aaron Gleeman of AaronGleeman.com reports.
Martin is ready to test things out in a game setting after missing the last three-plus weeks with a strained left hamstring. The Twins are idle Thursday before beginning a homestand Friday, and Martin should be activated at some point during that homestand.

Twins' Connor Prielipp: Notches five Ks in bulk relief

Prielipp struck out five and allowed two earned runs on five hits and no walks across four innings of relief in Monday's 5-4 loss to the Tigers.
Prielipp made a second straight appearance as a bulk reliever, this time piggybacking Joe Ryan (glute), who was lifted after four innings and 66 pitches in his first start with Minnesota in more than a month following his return from the injured list. Ryan should be ready to handle a more standard workload in his next start, so unless the Twins elect to expand the rotation to six men, Prielipp could end up taking on a more flexible bullpen role over the final two weeks of the season. The Twins are looking to limit Prielipp's workload down the stretch; he's already racked up 126.2 frames between the majors and Triple-A St. Paul in 2026, a 44-inning increase from his 2025 total.
Larnach went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Monday's loss to Detroit.
Larnach was part of a bottom-third of Minnesota's order that produced five of the Twins' eight hits and plated three of the team's four runs. His long ball in the fourth inning cut his club's deficit to one run, but Minnesota was never able to fully catch up. Larnach notched his first multi-hit performance since Aug. 28, and the long ball was his first since Aug. 26. He's starting on a near-everyday basis and is on pace for a career-best OPS with a .774 mark through 118 games.

Twins' Joe Ryan: Fans seven in return

Ryan (6-9) took the loss against Detroit on Monday, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and one walk while striking out seven batters over four innings.
It was an uneven outing for Ryan in his return from a stint on the injured list that lasted over a month. The Tigers scored four runs against the veteran righty over the first two innings, but he managed to rebound and retired the final eight batters he faced. Ryan also flashed good swing-and-miss stuff with 12 whiffs among 66 pitches and seven punchouts. His pitch count was logically limited following the lengthy absence, but that should push up over his remaining starts. Ryan is next lined up to take the mound at home versus Cleveland.
Twins' Connor Prielipp: Could pitch behind Joe Ryan on Monday

Prielipp could be a candidate to pitch bulk innings in relief behind starter Joe Ryan (glute) during Monday's game in Detroit, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
As he makes his return from the 15-day injured list Monday for his first appearance for the Twins since Aug. 4, Ryan isn't expected to be ready to handle a traditional starting role after tossing just three innings and 42 pitches in his lone minor-league rehab start prior to being activated. The Twins had already been planning on managing Prielipp's workload as the season winds down, so skipping the rookie's turn in the rotation and having him cover a few innings behind Ryan would seem to be a sensible approach. Ryan should be mostly stretched out the next time his turn in the rotation comes up, so Prielipp could be headed for a more flexible bullpen role following Monday's contest.
The Twins optioned Acton to Triple-A St. Paul on Monday.
Acton was knocked around for four runs while notching just one out in Sunday's loss to the White Sox, and he finds himself back in the minors a day later. He's clearing off the active roster to make space for the return of Joe Ryan (glute).

After missing the past month with a left glute strain, Ryan will make his return to the Twins' rotation with a start Monday in Detroit. The right-hander threw only 42 pitches in his lone rehab start, so his workload will be truncated against the Tigers. Lee went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's 10-1 loss against the White Sox.
Lee crushed a high fastball to right field off Grant Taylor in the seventh inning to break up the shutout, and the switch hitter accounted for half of the Twins' hits. This was Lee's 44th game of the year batting second, even though he has only a .609 OPS in that lineup slot and has hit much better near the bottom of the order. The 25-year-old is slashing .250/.298/.439 with 79 RBI, 63 runs scored, and 23 homers across 512 at-bats in 2026.

Twins' Bailey Ober: Inefficient in loss

Ober (7-5) took the loss Sunday against the White Sox, allowing one run on four hits and three walks while striking out six across 4.1 innings.
Ober has now gone eight starts without a win. After four scoreless frames, the right-hander gave up an RBI single to Munetaka Murakami to give the White Sox a 1-0 lead they never squandered. Ober needed 84 pitches (50 strikes) to record just 13 outs, his second-shortest start during a winless stretch in which he's gone 0-2 with a 4.20 ERA and 27:13 K:BB in 40.2 innings. He'll be on the lookout for more run support in his next scheduled start against Cleveland.
