Capitals' Logan Thompson: Can't deliver miracle for team
Thompson made 18 saves in a 3-1 loss to the Hurricanes in Game 5 on Thursday.
Thompson was brilliant early when he made a lunging save with 36 seconds left in the first to preserve the tie, but he should've stopped the eventual game winner. Andrei Svechnikov somehow put the puck in from below the right circle with 1:59 remaining. "It's my job to find the lane and get my eyes on it, and he sifted it through. It was a terrible goal to give up to end a season, and I've got to wear that," said Thompson after the game, per Tom Gulitti of NHL.com. "I'm an adult. That's on me, and I can be better." Thompson finished the postseason with a 5-5 record, 2.41 GAA and .917 save percentage in 10 starts.

Capitals' Logan Thompson: Slated to start Game 5
Head coach Spencer Carbery said Wednesday that Thompson is slated to start Thursday's Game 5 at home against the Hurricanes, Sammi Silber of The Hockey News reports.
Thompson hasn't been particularly sharp over the last two games, posting a 4.03 GAA and .877 save percentage en route to back-to-back losses. The Capitals are now facing a 3-1 deficit in the series, but the team appears set to lean upon the 28-year-old once again Thursday. Thompson was much more effective over his first seven appearances in the playoffs, going 5-2-0 with a 2.01 GAA and .931 save percentage, so he'll attempt to bounce back in Thursday's Game 5.

Capitals' Logan Thompson: Downed again by 'Canes
Thompson stopped 32 of 36 shots Monday in the Capitals' 5-2 loss to the Hurricanes in Game 4 of their second-round series. Carolina's final goal was scored into an empty net.
Washington's offense didn't wake up until the third period after falling behind 2-0, but Thompson couldn't give them a window to find an equalizer in the final frame. Thompson has given up four goals in back-to-back starts after looking sharp to begin the series, and with the Caps facing elimination in Game 5 on Thursday, the 28-year-old netminder will need to regain his earlier form. Through nine playoff games, Thompson still sports a 2.45 GAA and a .918 save percentage.

Capitals' Logan Thompson: Patrolling blue paint in Game 4
Thompson will be between the road pipes against the Hurricanes in Game 4 on Monday, per Chip Alexander of The Raleigh News & Observer.
Thompson has posted a solid .921 save percentage and a 2.30 GAA through three games in this series, but the Capitals have had trouble finding offense against a defensively sound Hurricanes squad. It's a road game for Washington, so it certainly won't help Thompson's case that Carolina will have the benefit of the last change. Thompson is 5-3 and has allowed 18 goals on 232 shots (.922 save percentage) over eight postseason appearances.

Capitals' Logan Thompson: Concedes four goals
Thompson gave up four goals on 28 shots in Saturday's 4-0 loss to Carolina in Game 3.
Thompson didn't get any offensive support in this one, so it really didn't matter how many goals he gave up -- though it was his second-worst performance of the postseason. Despite the loss, Thompson should be a lock to keep his starting role ahead of Game 4 versus the Hurricanes on the road Monday, with Charlie Lindgren firmly cemented in the No. 2 role.

Capitals' Logan Thompson: Defending crease Saturday
Thompson will guard the road goal against Carolina on Saturday in Game 3, Chip Alexander of The Raleigh News & Observer reports.
Thompson is coming off a 27-save performance in Thursday's 3-1 win over the Hurricanes in Game 2. He has posted a 5-2 record with a 2.01 GAA and a .931 save percentage through seven outings this postseason. Carolina ranks first in the league with 34.9 shots per game in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Capitals' Logan Thompson: Team MVP so far this postseason
Thompson made 27 saves in a 3-1 win over Carolina on Thursday in Game 2.
Thompson continued his Game 1 heroics into Game 2, and he made 16 saves in the third period alone. The only puck that got past him came on a third-period power play when Shayne Gostisbehere one-timed it from the right circle. Thompson is 5-2 with a 2.01 GAA and .931 save percentage this postseason. He has been the Caps's MVP so far, and he'll need to continue to be the team's top player to get past the powerful Canes.

Capitals' Logan Thompson: Poised to start in Game 2
Thompson is expected to start in goal at home versus the Hurricanes in Game 2 on Thursday.
Charlie Lindgren (personal) is away from the team for Thursday's contest, and Mitchell Gibson will serve as backup. That logically leaves Thompson as the starting goalie, which is expected since he's started all six games in the postseason so far. He played well with a 31-save effort in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Hurricanes in Game 1 on Tuesday, and he'll be looking to even the series in Game 2.

Capitals' Logan Thompson: Best player on ice in loss
Thompson made 31 saves in a 2-1 overtime loss to Carolina on Tuesday.
Thompson was the best player on the ice by a long shot. The Caps were outshot 33-14, and he had an absolutely monster game. The Caps shouldn't have even been in the game, but Thompson made sure they were. If anyone doubted this guy's star caliber, they can't anymore. He's 4-2-0 with a 2.17 GAA and a .926 save percentage in six games this postseason.

Capitals' Logan Thompson: In goal Tuesday
Thompson will get the starting nod at home versus Carolina in Game 1 on Tuesday, Tom Gulitti of NHL.com reports.
Thompson went 4-1 with a 2.23 GAA and a .923 save percentage in five games against the Habs in the first round. Outside of his lone defeat, the 28-year-old netminder has allowed two or fewer goals in each of his four wins. He'll face a Canes squad that is generating 3.80 goals per game in the postseason, good enough for fifth-best.

Capitals' Logan Thompson: Sharp in series-clinching win
Thompson made 28 saves Wednesday in the Capitals' 4-1 win over the Canadiens in Game 5 of their first-round series.
He took a shutout into the third period, but early in the final frame, Emil Heineman somehow got his stick on a puck that flashed across the front of the net in mid-air, tipping it past Thompson. The 28-year-old netminder will head into a second-round clash with the Hurricanes carrying plenty of momentum, having posted a 2.23 GAA and .923 save percentage in five games against the Habs.

Capitals' Logan Thompson: Bounces back after injury scare
Thompson stopped 16 of 18 shots in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Canadiens in Game 4.
Thompson left Friday's Game 3 with an apparent lower-body injury, but he was able to avoid missing additional time. The Capitals put in a better effort Sunday, limiting the shots Thompson saw, and he let in only two power-play tallies to Juraj Slafkovsky and Cole Caufield. This win extended the Capitals' series lead to 3-1, and Thompson has allowed 10 goals on 114 shots over those four contests. Assuming he feels fine after this outing, he can be penciled in to start again in Wednesday's Game 5 on home ice.

Capitals' Logan Thompson: Good to go for Game 4
Thompson (lower body) will tend the road twine Sunday versus the Canadiens in Game 4, per Sammi Silber of The Hockey News.
Thompson was deemed a game-time decision heading into Sunday after he was injured in Friday's Game 3 loss. The 28-year-old needed assistance leaving the ice after getting hurt in that contest, but he's healthy enough to return for a pivotal road matchup just two days later. Charlie Lindgren is on hand as Washington's No. 2 netminder in the event that Thompson aggravates his lower-body injury.

Capitals' Logan Thompson: Game-time decision
Thompson (lower body) will be a game-time decision for Sunday's Game 4 road matchup versus Montreal, according to Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post.
Thompson participated in Sunday's morning skate after being helped off the ice in the third period of Friday's 6-3 loss to the Canadiens in Game 3. He occupied the starter's crease during Sunday's session before heading to the dressing room at the same time as Charlie Lindgren. The 28-year-old Thompson has a 2-1 record with a 2.73 GAA and a .917 save percentage this postseason.

Capitals' Logan Thompson: Not practicing Saturday
Thompson (lower body) did not participate in Saturday's optional skate, Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post reports.
Coach Spencer Carbary did not provide an update on Thompson's injury or availability for Sunday's Game 4 matchup in Montreal. Thompson was saddled with the loss Friday, allowing five goals on 35 shots in a 6-3 Montreal victory. He has given up eight goals on 96 shots (.917 save percentage) in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. If Thompson is out for Sunday's matchup, Clay Stevenson will probably be Charlie Lindgren's backup.

Capitals' Logan Thompson: Leaves Game 3 in third period
Thompson sustained an apparent injury to his left leg in Friday's Game 3 versus the Canadiens, Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post reports.
Thompson took a beating in this game, but the final incident that knocked him out of the game was when Dylan Strome fell on his leg following the Canadiens' fifth goal. Thompson was unable to put weight on his left leg as he exited the contest. This doesn't bode well for his availability for Game 4 on Sunday and beyond. Charlie Lindgren will take over as the Capitals' No. 1 goalie as long as Thompson is out. Thompson gave up five goals on 35 shots prior to the injury.

Capitals' Logan Thompson: Starting Friday
Thompson will defend the visiting crease in Montreal on Friday in Game 3, Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post reports.
Thompson has given up only three goals on 61 shots (.951 save percentage) in his opening two wins of the series. Thompson was outstanding for most of the season, going 31-6-6 with a 2.49 GAA and a .910 save percentage across 43 regular-season contests. Montreal was 17th in scoring during the regular season, averaging 2.96 goals per game.

Capitals' Logan Thompson: Impressive in Game 2 win
Thompson stopped 25 of 26 shots in Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Canadiens in Game 2.
For the second game in a row, Thompson looked impressive between the posts and limited the damage to a minimum. He was beaten in the early stages of the second period by Christian Dvorak, but he protected the crease effectively the rest of the way and was at his best in the third period when he stopped all of the Canadiens' 14 shots. Thompson will aim to continue his winning ways when the series shifts to Montreal for Game 3 on Friday.

Capitals' Logan Thompson: Exits ice first Wednesday
Thompson was the first goalie to leave the ice Wednesday, Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post reports, indicating he'll be in the crease at home for Game 2 against the Habs.
Thompson was stellar in Game 1, stopping 33 of 35 shots (.943 save percentage) in a 3-2 victory over the Habs. While Washington split the crease for much of the season this year, it seems Thompson will get an extended run as the No. 1 option ahead of Charlie Lindgren in the postseason.
